Tempdrop first came on the market in July of 2017. I purchased my first Tempdrop in January of 2018 when I began using Fertility Awareness and have used it on and off since. Tempdrop 2.0 is their new and improved model, and as soon as I knew it was coming out, I pre-ordered it.
Tempdrop 2 Unboxing
I’ve been using the Tempdrop 2.0 for two cycles now and am impressed with the changes! Here are some of my thoughts on it.
My Favorite Features
The navy arm band is softer and more comfortable than the previous light blue version (and the original white band). I have large arms and am happy with the S/M band size with the extender, which is included in every box.
The upgraded Tempdrop sensor has lightning-fast syncing, which is noticeably quicker than the original Tempdrop. This was a pleasant surprise when I synced it for the first time.
One of the biggest improvements with Tempdrop 2.0 is the much easier battery change. Previously, replacing the battery required opening up the entire sensor, often causing damage to the device. Now, Tempdrop 2 features a slide-open panel on the front that opens with a pin key similar to a SIM key, eliminating the risk of damaging the device during battery changes — a major improvement!
Additional Improvements
The original Tempdrop could hold 24 hours of data before needing to be synced, translating to about three nights of 8 hours of sleep data. This could be problematic for those without internet access for more than three nights, like campers. The Tempdrop 2.0 can hold 60 hours of data, or about a week’s worth of sleep data, offering greater flexibility.
Tempdrop 2.0 also features automatic firmware updates. While I’m not entirely familiar with the technical details, automatic updates sound great to me.
More About Tempdrop
Tempdrop takes your temperature throughout the night, providing a reading when synced with the Tempdrop app. A proprietary algorithm produces the morning temperature, which can be charted to identify ovulation retroactively through a biphasic temperature pattern.
Initially, Tempdrop’s algorithm would retroactively adjust temperatures to smooth out disturbances, which was a major help to those with irregular sleep schedules. However, the December 2022 algorithm update stopped retroactive adjustments, seemingly improving the ease of use of the device.
Some issues have arisen with each update, which I have discussed in my previous review and will discuss in more detail in my upcoming full review (subscribe to my newsletter below to be notified when it’s published!). Keep reading to find out if Tempdrop 2.0 is the right choice for you!

From my personal and professional experience over the past six years, Tempdrop works best for those with regular cycles of 26-35 days and low to moderately disturbed sleep.
However, those with long cycles, with multiple estrogen surges or ovulation attempts — often seen in individuals with PCOS or those in postpartum cycle 0 (before cycles return) — tend to have more problems with Tempdrop. For these individuals, I recommend learning a temperature-free method of fertility awareness, such as the Billings Ovulation Method or the Marquette Method. These methods are highly effective for irregular cycles and offer higher efficacy than temperature-based methods paired with Tempdrop.
Should You Upgrade to Tempdrop 2.0?
If you’re trying to decide between purchasing the original Tempdrop or the Tempdrop 2.0, the Tempdrop 2 is absolutely worth the higher price. The new features make it the best choice.
For those who already own the original Tempdrop and are considering an upgrade, a few factors should be considered. If your budget allows, Tempdrop 2.0 is worth the investment, and the original Tempdrop holds a decent resale value if you decide to pass it on.
However, if you’re on a tight budget or purchased your original Tempdrop within the last six months, the new features may not justify the extra expense at this time.
Getting Off on the Right Foot with Tempdrop
When purchasing either Tempdrop model, you have the option to add insurance and an extended warranty, which I highly recommend. Over the years, I’ve used both and have never regretted the extra expense.
For those new to Tempdrop, I also suggest charting your cycle with a standard oral basal body thermometer alongside Tempdrop for at least three cycles. This will ensure Tempdrop works well for you and help you identify any potential issues I mentioned in my previous review.
If you decide Tempdrop is right for you, you can get 10% off your purchase when you use code AFHOLISTICFERTILITY, or purchase through this link. This discount is also stackable with any sale Tempdrop is running. Currently, both versions of Tempdrop are discounted for their 7 year anniversary sale!
Conclusion
While I have a love-hate relationship with Tempdrop, many users are happy with their own experience. The new improvements in Tempdrop 2.0 do make it a more user-friendly tool for tracking fertility, particularly for those with regular cycles and moderately stable sleep patterns. If you’re considering Tempdrop, weigh your individual needs and cycle characteristics to determine if it’s the right fit for you.
